Tektronix, Inc., a
leading worldwide provider of test, measurement and monitoring instrumentation,
donated an oscilloscope to Portland Public School’s ACCESS Academy program as
part of the Tektronix Education Support Program (TESP), a company initiative to
foster interest in physics and electronics within the local community, other
regions of the country and around the globe.
“Tektronix is
committed to helping inspire young students’ interest in mathematics, computers
and physics through hands-on experience with state-of-the-art electronic
solutions,” said Dr. Kevin Ilcisin, Chief Technology Officer, Tektronix. “By
supporting science education, we are helping our communities excel
academically. Through this donation, we are providing a science teacher and his
students with a powerful teaching tool to increase their understanding of our
physical world.”
The ACCESS Academy is
a 1st through 8th grade program that serves Talented and Gifted Students from
Portland and nearby communities, that is housed at Sabin Elementary School in
NE Portland. The oscilloscope will be used by ACCESS science teacher Alfonso
Garcia to teach physics and electronics concepts to seventh and eighth graders.
Furthermore, several students are planning to use the oscilloscope in
programming projects they will create for the school science fair, with
guidance from a Tektronix engineer.
The oscilloscope was
recently presented at the ACCESS Academy by Tektronix staff, who also
demonstrated the importance of measuring electronic signals accurately and used
the oscilloscope to illustrate the physics of music.
“The opportunity for
our students to learn about physics while using test and measurement equipment
from one of the world’s technology leaders is invaluable,” said Eryn Bagby,
Principal, of the ACCESS Academy. “This
donation by Tektronix will become an essential piece of equipment for our
science lab which we hope to build on in the future.”
“When one of the
world’s leading electronics companies generously helps a community educate its
children in the sciences, we all win,” said Matt Shelby, Public Information
Officer for Portland Public Schools.”
